Greenback Cutthroat Trout

______________________

The Greenback Cutthroat (Oncorhynchus clarki stomias) was thought to be extinct until a pure strain was found in a stream north of Ft. Collins, CO in 1959. Now with the help of the Division of Wildlife and Rocky Mountain National Park the reintroduction of the Greenback has been successful in over 20 lakes within the park. The fish is no longer on the Endangered Species list and may soon be removed from the Threatened list. This rare fish is a beautiful catch and is one of the main reasons so many people travel to the Estes Park area to fly fish every summer.
